The Turkmen Shepherd, often referred to as the Alabai or the Central Asian Shepherd, is considered one of the oldest and purest dog breeds in the world. Numerous Turkmen nomadic tribes have been breeding these dogs for centuries in the Karakum Desert for a variety of uses, including protecting property and livestock. On the territory of modern Turkmenistan, only one breed has been preserved in its original form: the Turkmen Alabai. Its appearance has not changed for five thousand years. Embark with us on a journey of discovery and adventure to celebrate Nowruz Festival, the Persian New Year, in the enchanting village of Yayla nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Akhal Region. This ancient festival, marking the arrival of spring and the renewal of nature, invites us to partake in a vibrant tapestry of traditions dating back thousands of years. Amidst lush greenery and azure skies, locals and visitors alike gather to revel in the joyous energy of Nowruz, accompanied by the infectious rhythm of traditional music and the tantalizing aroma of Turkmen cuisine.

As we immerse ourselves in this cultural oasis, during this journey we'll also explore the rich heritage of the Turkmen Shepherd, revered as one of the oldest and purest dog breeds in the world. From the remote parts of the Karakum Desert to traditional dog kennels in Ashgabat and surrounding villages, we'll witness firsthand the proud traditions of breeding and training that have shaped these resilient desert dogs. Interacting with skilled shepherds, knowledgeable breeders and experts, we'll gain deeper insights into the enduring bond between man and dog, leaving us with a profound appreciation for the cultural significance of the Turkmen Shepherd and its integral role in Turkmenistan's heritage. This journey is not just limited to the adventure; it's also a cultural and educational experience that will leave you with a profound appreciation for these incredible canines and the culture that has cherished them for millennia.

Tour Itinerary:

  • Welcome to Turkmenistan! Arrive in Ashgabat and proceed to Passport Control for immigration followed by baggage collection and clearing customs formalities. After baggage collection, walk towards the arrival lounge where you shall be met by our representative who will assist you while transferring to 4-star Hotel or a similar for check-in.  Take a little bit of rest after the flight. Our day starts late in the morning, but we're off to celebrate Nowruz, meaning "New Day," is the Persian New Year and a significant cultural and traditional festival celebrated by millions of people worldwide, particularly in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Iran, and other regions influenced by Persian culture. It marks the beginning of spring and the renewal of nature. We will start our way to Yayla, the enchanting village nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Akhal Region, where you will have the unique opportunity to participate in the celebration which is thousands of years old. The air is filled with the infectious rhythm of traditional music, and the aroma of tantalizing dishes wafts through the village square, enticing you to indulge in the rich flavors of Turkmen cuisine. Don't miss the majestic display of Turkmen shepherd dogs herding their flocks, the graceful Akhalteke horses showcasing their beauty and agility, and the majestic camels of the Karakum Desert adding a touch of ancient allure to this vibrant tapestry of traditions. After the celebration, we will return to Ashgabat for the city tour. We begin our adventure at Independence Park, a lush oasis in the heart of Ashgabat. Stroll through meticulously manicured gardens and marvel at the towering Neutrality Arch. Learn about Turkmenistan's enduring commitment to peace and unity. Visit Alabai monuments dedicated to these majestic canines, celebrated for their strength, loyalty, and role in Turkmenistan's history. Discover the stories and traditions that have woven these dogs into the nation's culture. Enjoy a welcome dinner with fellow travelers, briefing with your expert tour manager for the activities during the stay, and share your first-day experiences. Overnight at a 4-star Hotel or a similar.

  • Today we start our unique journey from Ashgabat to Mary with our 4x4 Jeeps and several authentic stops on the way.  Our stops will include settlements like Mane, Chache, and Tejen which are renowned as the cradle of World recognized Turkmen shepherd dogs, where these majestic canines have been lovingly bred and famous lines like Ak Yekemen, Kor Gaplan, Ak Gush, Tohmet, and many others originated in the history of Central Asian Shepherds.Top of Form As you depart Ashgabat, the modern cityscape gradually transforms into tranquil countryside, offering picturesque views of the clay desert on the left and the Kopetdag mountains on the right. After two hours of drive, we will get off the main road (45 km, 1h-30 min) and start our way towards the 11th-century Meane Baba mausoleum. During this scenic 45 km drive we will be seeing flocks of grazing sheep and aboriginal Turkmen Shepherd dogs protecting their territory. As time and access to the off-road drive allow we will stop by these sheep flocks and try to connect with the local shepherd ask questions about the daily life of shepherd dogs and hear stories of how the courageous dogs fight against the wolves and other predators. Afterward, we arrive at the Mausoleum of Mane Baba which stands as a testament to early Seljuk architecture, dating back to the 11th century AD. This sacred site holds significance not only for its architectural beauty but also for its spiritual importance in Turkmen culture. Visitors can witness the traditional Turkmen ceremony of hudayoli, a practice of communal meal-sharing conducted in the name of God, believed to bestow health and blessings upon participants. Now we entered the territory of Mane and Chache villages known as the cradle of the purest aboriginal Turkmen Shepherd dogs. Our next stop will be Chache Village where we'll have the opportunity to meet with a renowned local shepherd dog breeder. They will provide us with valuable insights into Turkmen Alabais and showcase the shepherd dogs of the village. We will continue our drive and can make a stop in the charming city of Tejen. Ahal region itself and Tejen city are renowned as the cradle of Alabai dogs, where these majestic canines have been lovingly bred.Top of Form Here, you'll visit a local Alabai kennel, where you can immerse yourself in the world of these magnificent shepherd dogs. The kennel visit offers a unique insight into the deep-rooted Turkmen tradition of breeding and cherishing Alabai dogs. After we will continue to the historical city of Mary, where ancient wonders and rich history await your exploration. Upon arrival check in at Mary 4-star hotel or a similar. Dinner will be served at the hotel.

  • Today is the highlight of your journey. After breakfast, we will proceed into our 4x4 jeeps and start the off-road desert adventure drive from Mary City to the Gonurdepe archaeological site. It is a fascinating expedition through the historical heartland of Turkmenistan, where ancient secrets and natural wonders await. Departing from Mary, you'll embark on a road that traverses the boundless Karakum Desert, revealing its enigmatic beauty. A highlight of this journey is a visit to the Gonurdepe archaeological site, where ongoing excavations have unearthed intriguing discoveries, including dog skeletons. These ancient dog remains offer a captivating glimpse into the history of the Alabai breed, believed to be the ancestors of modern Central Asian Shepherds. As you explore the archaeological wonders of Gonurdepe, you'll feel a profound connection between the Alabai dogs of today and their ancestors. The loyalty and protective instincts that define the Alabai breed have been ingrained in these dogs for millennia, and it's a testament to the enduring bond between these noble canines and the people of Turkmenistan. Additionally, on your way to Gonurdepe, you may have the chance to make stops and witness working shepherd dogs in the vast expanse of the Karakum Desert. Here, you can observe these magnificent dogs in their element, guarding and herding livestock with remarkable skill and dedication. It's a unique opportunity to witness the Alabai's vital role in Turkmen culture and the preservation of their centuries-old traditions. This journey, blending archaeology and living heritage, is a testament to the profound connections between the past and the present in this captivating region of Turkmenistan. Return to Mary City and if the time allows, we will visit the local breeder and kennel located in Mary. Dinner in town and share the unique experiences with your fellow travelers.

  • Take the transfer to Mary airport and take flight to Ashgabat. Upon arrival in Ashgabat, our first stop will be the Russian Bazaar, where we can pick up any last-minute provisions needed for our upcoming two-day desert adventure. As we set out, we'll embark on a journey through the vast expanse of the Karakum desert, exploring its remote and untouched landscapes. Venturing inland through the shifting sands and sparse vegetation of saksaul, acacia, and kandym bushes, we'll arrive at the village of Bokurdak, approximately 100 km from Ashgabat. Here, we'll have the unique opportunity to experience traditional Turkmen life firsthand. We'll visit local families, witnessing age-old activities such as embroidery, bread baking, and camel milking. Delving deeper into the cultural heritage of the Turkmen semi-nomads, we'll learn about the significance of amulets and protective Alaja strings in their everyday lives. After a hearty lunch with the locals, we'll venture into the desert pastures to connect with the local shepherds and their loyal shepherd dogs as they go about their daily tasks. Continuing our journey towards the Fire Crater/Darwaza, we'll navigate through the dunes until we reach our destination in the late afternoon. As our drivers set up camp and prepare a delicious nomadic dinner, we'll have the chance to witness the local shepherds tending to their sheep flock nearby. As the sun sets, we'll relax and soak in the breathtaking views of the flaming crater, surrounded by the tranquility of the desert. Overnight accommodation will be in tents or yurts, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty of the desert night sky.

  • After breakfast, we set our sights eastward, embarking on a journey to one of the most remote corners of the Karakum desert: the village of Damla. This desert drive spans 110 kilometers, offering a rare opportunity to explore a destination not often accessible to foreign travelers or even locals. Damla is nestled amidst the vast expanse of the Karakum desert, a landscape marked by high dunes and hard, dusty takyrs—plains of hard-packed clay. These ancient plains reveal remnants of the prehistoric Tethys Sea and the fabled Uzboy River, offering a glimpse into the region's rich geological history. After a three-hour drive, we descend into a deep valley, where the village of Damla emerges almost unexpectedly. Translating to "droplet of water," Damla is home to a community of skilled shepherds and hunters, renowned for their use of the unique Tazy dog breed. Upon arrival, we'll be greeted by the sight of Tazy dogs and Falcons, guarding the entrance of traditional yurts. Engaging with the locals, we'll learn about the daily tasks of shepherd dogs, protecting sheep flocks against predators like wolves, and witness firsthand how the Tazy breed excels in desert hunting. Our overnight stay will be in a traditional national house, providing us with a glimpse into the authentic lifestyle of the Karakum desert's inhabitants.

  • After bidding farewell to the picturesque Damla village, we begin our journey back to Ashgabat by heading south across the expansive desert terrain. Along the way, we may encounter other shepherds accompanied by their faithful dogs, offering us glimpses into the traditional way of life in this remote region. Our route takes us through the mesmerizing desert landscape, with occasional stops to greet fellow travelers and marvel at the indigenous wildlife that calls this harsh environment home. As we navigate the sandy dunes, we'll make a brief stop at another desert settlement, Yerbent, providing us with a glimpse of what a desert metropolis may look like. Here, we'll take a short lunch break, soaking in the tranquil ambiance of the desert surroundings. Continuing our journey, we'll travel along a newly constructed highway, traversing through the heart of the Kopetdag oasis, home to the largest city in Turkmenistan. Upon reaching our destination, you'll have the evening free to explore the vibrant city of Ashgabat at your leisure. Conclude the day with a delightful group dinner, reminiscing about the unforgettable experiences shared during our desert adventure. Overnight at a 4-star hotel.

  • Following a hearty breakfast, we'll embark on a thrilling adventure, venturing into the rugged terrain of Turkmenistan aboard 4x4 jeeps as we depart from the bustling cityscape of Ashgabat towards the renowned Nokhur village. This journey offers a dramatic transition from urban modernity to the serene beauty of the mountains. As we wind along scenic mountain roads, keep your eyes peeled for the magnificent Alabai shepherd dogs and their accompanying sheep flocks, gracefully navigating the steep slopes and verdant valleys. Our journey may include stops to interact with local shepherds, but caution is advised during this time of year, as the newborn lambs and vigilant Turkmen Shepherd dogs diligently protect their herds from potential threats. These remarkable dogs are renowned for their guardianship, ensuring the safety of their owners' property amidst the remote landscapes where village life thrives. Despite their formidable role, the locals are known for their warm hospitality and would be delighted to welcome us into their homes for the night. In this rugged terrain, the Alabai dogs serve as indispensable companions, embodying centuries-old traditions and safeguarding the cherished way of life in Nokhur village. As the evening descends, we'll enjoy a delicious dinner and restful overnight stay at a local guest house, surrounded by the tranquility and charm of the Turkmen mountains.

  • In the morning we will continue exploring the shepherds and alabai dogs in the vicinity of the village. After we will travel back to Ashgabat. On the way to Ashgabat, we will stop at a stud farm near Geok Depe town.  It is a former stronghold of the Tekke tribe and the location of the greatest battle for Russian dominance in Central Asia in the late 19th century. After arriving at the farm, you will be guided through the stud farm and given a display and introduction to Akhal Teke horses.  Following the show of Akhal Teke horses we will enjoy our lunch in the company of a local breeder who is eager to welcome you and share his deep-rooted experiences in the world of Alabai dogs. With a passion for these majestic canines that stretches back generations, he will introduce you to some of his finest shepherd dogs. This is a unique opportunity to gain insights into the art and science of breeding these remarkable dogs, as well as to hear the tales of their loyalty, strength, and enduring traditions in Turkmen culture. The breeder's stories and the presence of his Alabais are a testament to the rich heritage and the profound bond between these dogs and the people of Gokdepe. If the time permits we will visit the Spirituality Mosque complex, the largest in Central Asia.  Dinner in Ashgabat. Overnight at a 4-star Hotel.

  • Today is our day at leisure and we will visit the legendary Sunday Bazaar (Open Thu, Sat, and Sun). Also known as Tolkuchka it is one of the largest open marketplaces in Central Asia, and it attracts people from all over the country who are selling or buying camels, cattle, poultry, amulets, carpets, jewelry, and countless other goods. Also, we will spend some free time in Ashgabat to visit the Russian Bazaar or maybe stop by the local bookstore to buy some books and souvenirs related to the Turkmen shepherd dog. In the afternoon if the time permits, we may visit the famous local Turkmen Shepherd dog breeder with the kennels nestled in the scenic surroundings of Ashgabat.  Prepare for an unforgettable journey as we invite you to explore the timeless traditions of the Turkmen Shepherd dog breed. You'll be greeted by passionate breeders who have dedicated their lives to preserving and nurturing the Alabai breed.  Spend quality time with this devoted breeder and their selected dogs. Learn about the breed's distinctive characteristics, temperament, and their significant role in Turkmen culture. Experience the genuine affection these dogs have for their human companions. Explore the breeding facilities and understand the meticulous processes that ensure the purity and vitality of the breed. Meet the group at the hotel and depart for farewell dinner.   • After breakfast in the morning, transfer to the airport to catch the international flight. End of the service.

Single Room Supplement: USD 470 Per Person (For all nights of the tour if you wish to stay in a single room).

Booking Details: An early booking discount of USD 250 is available for participants who sign up for the trip by September 1, 2024. To reserve your spot on this program, an initial deposit of USD 750 per person and a signed reservation form are required. A minimum of 7 participants is necessary to run the tour, with a maximum capacity of 10 participants. The final balance for the trip is due 60 days prior to departure and must be paid in full. If the balance is not paid in full by the due date, your reservation will be treated as a default cancellation and will be subject to a cancellation charge of all payments and deposits made to date. Tour Fitness Level

Moderate: Fits all age groups with good health, some fitness level, and a sense of adventure. There will be some long walking days and a bit of standing while touring. Access to some of the sites and attractions will require walking on uneven terrain or steep staircases. Few elevations, a pleasant but busy schedule, and several long overland drives during the tour. Feel free to discuss the details of the trip with us.

Lodging Level

Comfortable (3/4-stars): Lodges and hotels that provide a decent size room & an ensuite bathroom. A limited range of enhanced services, some of the onsite amenities, and a level of service that is acceptable by international standards.

Guest Houses/Yurts (1/2-stars): To have access to scenic landscapes & remote villages, simple shared guesthouses or yurt camps with shared bathroom facilities will be required during the tour.

Visa & Passport

International passports require a Turkmenistan visa. Letter of invitation will be obtained. Further details related to the visa application process will be sent out sixty (60) days before the trip. Ensuring that correct & valid visas are obtained remains the sole responsibility of the client.  Your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months from the last day of the trip & include empty pages for visas.

Useful Details to Know and Tour Map:

This off-road adventure requires long driving distances overland, with both paved and off-road conditions through the Karakum Desert. Air-conditioned 4x4 vehicles will provide comfort throughout the journey.  For the comfort of the travelers, air-conditioned transportation will be provided throughout the trip.  We will be making several restroom stops, stretching our legs, and enjoying the scenic views on the way. During the sightseeing days, travelers must be able to walk a minimum of two to three miles to keep up with fellow travelers. Walking to and from sites could be on uneven surfaces or unpaved paths. Please note that elevators are not available at tour sites.  We may have a few drives on poor-quality roads which are required to access the historical and archeological gems of the country.  Please make sure to have a comfy outfit and shoes for the sightseeing days. By signing up for this tour, participants agree that they have read and understood all the terms and conditions and that they are in good physical and mental health and have an open mind, a sense of adventure, and the ability to be tolerant and patient for the entire period of the tour.  To ensure that the itinerary runs efficiently and for the comfort and/or safety of travelers, Undiscovered Frontiers reserves the right to modify the order of the sightseeing activities at any time before departure or after the tour begins or cancel the tour if the planned itinerary is not possible to operate in the event of Force Majeure.
