Begin at Göbekli Tepe, a Neolithic marvel over 11,000 years old, believed to be one of humanity’s earliest celestial observatories. Fast forward millennia to the Ottoman Empire, which built grand clock towers to unify vast territories across multiple time zones. Designed for enthusiasts of horology, this exclusive tour takes you through Turkey’s most iconic sites of horology —from Ottoman-era palaces in Istanbul, where intricate mechanical clocks once dictated imperial life, to master clockmakers’ workshops, where tradition meets innovation. Explore historic clock mechanisms, meet renowned artisans, and uncover the artistry behind centuries of precision craftsmanship.

Arrive in Istanbul and proceed to Passport Control for immigration, followed by baggage collection and clearing customs formalities. After collecting your baggage, walk towards the arrival lounge, where our representative will meet you and assist with your transfer to a 4-star hotel conveniently located next to the airport for check-in. Once settled, a brief tour orientation will be held to familiarize you with the exciting itinerary ahead and answer any questions you may have. Enjoy a free evening at leisure before indulging in a delicious welcome dinner. Overnight at Park Inn by Radisson Istanbul Airport 4* or a similar hotel.

After a morning flight to Şanlıurfa, we embark on the highlight of our journey—Göbekli Tepe, the world’s oldest known temple complex, dating back to 9600 BCE. This UNESCO World Heritage Site predates Stonehenge by over 6,000 years, challenging conventional theories on early civilization. At the site, we will explore massive T-shaped limestone pillars, some towering over 16 feet high, intricately carved with animals and symbols. Believed to be a ceremonial and astronomical center, Göbekli Tepe has reshaped our understanding of humanity’s transition from hunter-gatherers to settled societies. Following our visit, we return to Şanlıurfa for a traditional Urfa Sıra Gecesi dinner, where we will savor authentic local dishes while enjoying live folk music and dance. Today, we continue exploring the legacy of the Göbekli Tepe civilization with a visit to Karahan Tepe, a newly excavated site revealing stunning carved pillars and structures that deepen our understanding of early human settlements. On the way, we stop in Harran, famous for its beehive houses and ancient university ruins. After Karahan Tepe, we return to Şanlıurfa to visit Balıklıgöl (Pool of Sacred Fish) and Halil-ur Rahman Mosque, where Prophet Abraham is believed to have been cast into the fire by King Nimrod, a biblical figure often associated with the Tower of Babel and early Mesopotamian rule. We conclude the day with a visit to Urfa Castle, offering panoramic views of the city. Overnight at our hotel in Şanlıurfa.

After an early breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our flight from Urfa to Ankara, arriving in the capital to explore its rich history. Our first stop is the Ankara Castle Gate Clock Tower, a 19th-century Ottoman landmark currently under restoration, where we'll admire its architecture from the outside. Next, we visit the Rahmi M. Koç Museum, showcasing industrial and transportation history with vintage automobiles, locomotives, aviation displays, and maritime exhibits. In the evening, we check into Latanya Boutique 5* (or similar), enjoy a delightful dinner, and rest for the adventures ahead.

Today, we embark on a scenic drive from Ankara to Yozgat, one of Anatolia’s oldest settlements, rich in history and culture. Our main stop is the Yozgat Clock Tower, an iconic Ottoman-era landmark built by master clockmaker Şakir Usta during the mayorship of Tevfik Zade Ahmet Bey. This seven-story stone tower, with four large clocks visible from all directions, has been marking time for over a century, its bells resonating across the city every hour. We’ll have an exclusive interior visit to explore its intricate mechanics and historical significance. Afterward, we enjoy a traditional Yozgat dinner, sampling regional specialties before returning to Ankara, wrapping up a day of cultural and historical exploration. Overnight at our hotel.

Today is a highlight of our itinerary as we journey to Safranbolu, situated on the famous Silk Road, famous for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture. Upon arrival, we’ll visit the Safranbolu Clock Tower, built in 1797, making it the oldest clock tower in Turkey. Commissioned by Grand Vizier İzzet Mehmet Paşa, this historic structure has kept time for over two centuries. We’ll enjoy a rare chance to explore the tower’s unique mechanism, appreciating the craftsmanship that has kept it running for generations. Afterward, we’ll stroll through Safranbolu’s UNESCO-listed historic district, with its cobblestone streets, Ottoman houses, vibrant bazaars, and Silk Road heritage. After soaking in the town’s rich history, we’ll enjoy an early dinner before returning to Ankara for an overnight stay at our hotel.

Our horological journey continues with a flight from eastern Turkey to Izmir, a coastal city known for its rich history and cultural heritage. Upon arrival at Adnan Menderes Airport, our team will greet you and escort you to begin exploring this vibrant destination. Our first stop will be the iconic Izmir Clock Tower in Konak Square, built in 1901 to commemorate Sultan Abdulhamid II’s reign. The tower features a four-faced clock, gifted by German Emperor Wilhelm II, and stands as a symbol of the city. We will observe the tower from the exterior while learning about its significance in Izmir’s timekeeping traditions. Next, we’ll visit the Basilica of St. John, the first church in Ephesus and believed to be the burial site of St. John the Apostle. On the way to Kuşadası, we’ll also stop at the House of the Virgin Mary, a revered pilgrimage site. After a day of discovery, we’ll transfer to Kuşadası for dinner and an overnight stay at Lavista Boutique 4* or a similar hotel.

Today is the cultural and historical highlight of our program, as we embark on a journey through Ephesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world. We’ll explore its impressive ruins at a relaxed pace, beginning with the magnificent Library of Celsus, an architectural wonder that once housed thousands of scrolls and was a beacon of knowledge in the ancient world. Next, we’ll visit the Great Theatre, a grand amphitheater that once hosted events for over 25,000 spectators, and marvel at its acoustics and scale. Our tour will also include the remains of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, where you’ll learn about the temple’s historical and spiritual significance. Throughout the day, you’ll be immersed in the rich history of Ephesus, with plenty of time to explore the site and soak in the incredible atmosphere. After a full day of cultural enrichment, we’ll return to the hotel in Kuşadası for an overnight stay.

After a traditional Turkish breakfast, we’ll transfer to Izmir Airport for a morning flight to Istanbul. Upon arrival, we’ll explore the historic Sultanahmet district, starting with the Hagia Sophia, a stunning architectural masterpiece. Next, we’ll visit the ancient Hippodrome, home to monuments like the Serpent Column and Obelisk of Theodosius. In the afternoon, we’ll explore Topkapı Palace, the former residence of Ottoman sultans, and its impressive imperial clock collection, which includes over 100 clocks and watches from the 16th to 19th centuries. A visit of the Restoration Room is planned. After a day of historical and horological discoveries, we’ll check in at Levni Istanbul Boutique 4* or a similar hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Note: Due to restricted transportation access in the Sultanahmet district, a designated protected heritage area, the sightseeing day in Istanbul will be conducted as a walking tour. -
Today, we begin with a visit to Dolmabahçe Palace, a stunning blend of Ottoman and European architecture. We’ll tour its lavish halls and grand staircase, followed by a visit to the Dolmabahçe Clock Tower (1895), commissioned by Sultan Abdülhamid II, with a French-made clock mechanism. Next, we’ll visit the Dolmabahçe Watch Museum, Turkey’s only clock museum, housing 71 clocks, including 18th and 19th-century European masterpieces and Ottoman Mevlevi works. We’ll also see the Yıldız Clock Tower and learn about the historical significance of the long-lost Taqi ad-Din Observatory. After a day of horological discoveries, we return to the hotel for the evening. Overnight at Levni Istanbul Boutique 4* or a similar hotel.

Today, we’ll visit the workshops of two renowned Turkish clockmakers, Recep Gürgen and Süle Gürbüz. At Recep Gürgen’s workshop, we’ll see his expertise in antique clock restoration and custom timepiece creation. Known for preserving the art of traditional clockmaking, Gürgen’s work is admired by collectors worldwide. Then, we’ll head to Süle Gürbüz’s workshop, where we’ll witness her skill in restoring and crafting exquisite timepieces. As an author of influential books on horology, Gürbüz has greatly contributed to the field; her autographed books will be avialble. Afterward, we’ll explore the Kapalı Çarşı (Grand Bazaar), one of the world’s oldest and largest markets, famous for its antiques, timepieces, and vibrant atmosphere. Overnight at our hotel.

Motor coach trip to Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. In the Tophane district, we’ll visit the tombs of the Ottoman founders, Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi, with stunning panoramic views. Our horological highlight is the Tophane Clock Tower, built in 1905 during Sultan Abdülhamid II’s reign, a symbol of Ottoman modernization. We’ll also explore the Yeşil Türbe (Green Tomb), the 1421 mausoleum of Sultan Mehmed I, renowned for its beautiful Iznik tiles and intricate architecture. After discovering Bursa, we’ll enjoy an early dinner before returning to Istanbul for the evening and overnight at our hotel.

Today, we start with a visit to Feriköy Antik Pazarı, a unique antique market in Istanbul’s lively district. Known for its eclectic mix of vintage treasures like furniture, jewelry, art, and clocks, the market offers a chance to discover rare pieces and engage with local vendors. In the afternoon, we’ll enjoy a Bosphorus boat cruise, offering stunning views of Istanbul’s skyline, historic palaces, bridges, and waterfront mansions. We’ll end the day with a farewell dinner, celebrating the journey and shared experiences. Overnight at our hotel.

Visa & Passport:
U.S. passport holders can enter Turkey without a visa for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. It is the sole responsibility of the traveler to ensure they have the correct and valid visa for entry. Additionally, your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond your departure date from Turkey and should have at least one blank page for entry and exit stamps.
What to Expect on This Journey:
This journey through Turkey will involve some long drives, but the roads are generally paved and in good condition. For your comfort, air-conditioned transportation will be provided throughout the trip, with regular rest stops to stretch your legs, enjoy scenic views, and refresh. During sightseeing days, travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles daily to explore Turkey’s historic sites and monuments. Walking may involve uneven surfaces or unpaved paths, especially in older areas and ancient ruins. Please note that elevators are not available at many tour sites, and some archaeological sites may require walking through hilly or rocky terrain. We may also experience drives on less-maintained roads to access remote or less-visited treasures such as ancient ruins and remote landscapes. Comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended for sightseeing days.
