Tour Introduction & Journey Map
This journey through Turkey explores the cultural and scientific dimensions of timekeeping, from the astronomical alignments of Neolithic sanctuaries to the mechanical precision of Ottoman clock towers. Traversing over 11,000 years of history, the itinerary examines how civilizations have conceptualized, measured, and institutionalized time. In Istanbul, delve into imperial collections at Topkapı Palace and Dolmabahçe Palace, and meet contemporary Turkish clockmakers preserving centuries-old craft. In Bursa, Ayvalık, and Safranbolu, investigate the symbolic and civic roles of clock towers during the Ottoman modernization era. At Ephesus, encounter architectural remnants of ancient systems of knowledge and ritualized temporality. The tour culminates in Şanlıurfa with field visits to Göbekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe, monumental sites whose astronomical significance challenges prevailing theories of early civilization.
