Begin your day by crossing the Nile by boat to visit the Valley of the Kings, the final resting place of ancient pharaohs. Continue your exploration at the magnificent Temple of Hatshepsut, the queen who became Pharaoh. This awe-inspiring temple at Deir el-Bahari, on Luxor’s west bank, features three man-made terraces that rise majestically toward the sheer cliff face. The site was sacred to Hathor, the goddess who nurtured and reared every king, including their mythological ancestor, the god Horus. Next, head to the Valley of the Workers (Deir el-Medina), home to the artisans and laborers who built the royal tombs, and the Valley of the Queens, where the wives of the pharaohs were laid to rest. The selection of the Valley of the Kings as a royal burial ground was significant. Thus, ancient Egyptian cemeteries were generally situated on the west bank of the Nile.
